The iMac takes up more space than a laptop, but not as much as most desktop PCs, and it eliminates cable and cord clutter. Everything but the keyboard and mouse is encased in a translucent, rounded-edge case that looks sort of like the new Beetle and the Umbra line of colored plastic trash cans. There's no separate CPU (Central Processing Unit, the usually big, blocky suitcase-size part of a PC system) and monitor. ![]() Nothing about it says office or serious, except when you look at the specs: a fast 266MHz PowerPC G3 processor, a 6-gigabyte hard drive and a 24X CD-ROM plus built-in stereo speakers with SRS (surround) sound - great for playing games and listening to multimedia sound. But that's no reason to delay gratification if the iMac sounds as enticing to you as we feel it is.Įverything about the iMac says cool, kids, women, home, fun, games and the Web. The shortage has led to speculation that it's time for Apple to announce an upgrade or even new machines: iMacs with 17-inch screens and faster processors, or portable iMacs and even all-black models. The popular blueberry, grape and lime-colored iMacs were back-ordered until May. When The News called MacMall, one of the leading Apple-authorized dealers, last week to check on availability, we found that only the tangerine and strawberry models were in stock. No wonder it's selling out about as fast as the '90s Beetle. Time magazine called it the Machine of the Year in January, and even PC Magazine gave it a Technical Excellence award. The iMac has a lot going for it: It looks great, is easy to use, and performs well - all at a low price: less than $1,199. That, plus the 56K modem, make it clear that the i in iMac stands for Internet. It comes with a direct connection to EarthLink, an Internet access provider, already installed. Just plug it in and turn it on to surf the Web in style. The cuddly iMac is designed to be the first complete Internet Age computer - straight from the box. As curvy and colorful as a roll of five-flavor LifeSavers, the mighty little Apple iMac computer - in strawberry, lime, blueberry, tangerine and grape - is a refreshing taste of what's possible if, as the Apple ads advise, we "think different.
